A new partnership between Avery Dennison and The Sustainable Angle will showcase the sustainable fabric innovations transforming the apparel industry.

To make a difference to the environment, there’s no need to look any further than the clothes on our backs. The materials they are made of, the way they’re manufactured, and even the way we wash and dry them all have an impact on the climate, water and air quality.

A new partnership between Avery Dennison and The Sustainable Angle aims to innovate apparel branding with sustainable fabrics to create a truly sustainable garment – from the material itself to the branding it’s adorned with.

Through the partnership, The Sustainable Angle will research and curate innovative fabrics that are intended to have a smaller environmental footprint. Avery Dennison’s Retail Branding and Information Solutions division will showcase the fabrics at its Customer Design and Innovation Centers in Los Angeles and Sprockhovel, Germany. The fabric exhibits will be modeled after The Sustainable Angle’s Future Fabrics Expo.

Buyers, designers and product developers from leading apparel companies and retailers regularly visit Avery Dennison’s innovation centers in search of creative and sustainable solutions that elevate their brands. The partnership between Avery Dennison and The Sustainable Angle will provide them with valuable insight into advanced fabrics and sustainable branding alternatives.

“Since sustainability is woven into the fabric of our culture, we couldn’t be more excited to collaborate with The Sustainable Angle to further our vision of providing intelligent, creative and sustainable solutions,” said Helen Sahi, director of sustainability at Avery Dennison. “By giving our customers access to a unique range of sustainable materials, we’re helping to raise the profile of their brands and reduce their environmental footprint.”

Initially, Avery Dennison’s innovation centers will showcase sustainable alternatives to standard leather and performance fabrics, exploring textile innovation that can minimize the environmental impact of apparel manufacturing. Even the hangers and packaging for the fabric samples will be sustainably designed by the Avery Dennison team: for example, hangers will be made from a mix of compressed kraft paper and post-consumer waste paper. The paperboard header card that displays information about the fabric will be printed digitally.

“Apparel consumers are increasingly concerned about the impact their choices have on the environment,” said Sahi. “They’re looking to retailers and clothing brands to offer more sustainable solutions. As a supplier to some of the world’s biggest brands, we’re in a unique position to inform their buying choices and help them meet consumer demand. Our partnership with The Sustainable Angle is one way we’re working inside the apparel industry to promote sustainability worldwide.”

Nina Marenzi, founder and director of The Sustainable Angle, said her organization is “delighted” to work with Avery Dennison. “[Avery Dennison is] a company that we respect enormously for their aims to continuously improve the sustainability of their products and processes.”
