"At Avery Dennison, we believe people are the underlying drivers of innovation and we’ve achieved promising results through this program"

In a ceremony held today at East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST), the Avery Dennison Foundation (ADF) awarded “Spirit of Invention” Scholarships to twelve college students in recognition of their outstanding innovation capabilities and practices in science. Georges Gravanis, Vice President and General Manager, Avery Dennison Label and Packaging Materials, ADF Director Alicia Maddox, Shen Wei, Secretary of the Communist Party Committee, representatives from ECUST and other guests participated in the event and congratulated the award winners.

The twelve InvEnt Scholarship recipients each received US$1300 towards their study in the coming year and are eligible for the scholarship for the next two years. These students are from ECUST, Beijing Institute of Graphic Communication, South China University of Technology, and Wuhan University. After the ceremony, the scholarship recipients visited Avery Dennison’s Neal Research Center in Kunshan. They will also participate in a two-day Innovation Workshop designed to develop their teamwork, innovation and business leadership.

“At Avery Dennison, we believe people are the underlying drivers of innovation and we’ve achieved promising results through this program,” says Alicia Maddox. “We will continue our investment by supporting more talented young people who are willing to leverage their innovation capabilities to further propel China’s economic growth.”

The Avery Dennison Corporation established the Avery Dennison Foundation as its philanthropic arm in 1978. In 2008, ADF launched the InvEnt “Spirit of Invention” Scholarship Program in China to encourage young college students to become more interested in science and technology and engage in innovation activities. Now in its fifth year, the program has expanded its support to a total of 66 promising undergraduate students in China, with scholarships amounting to over US$200,000.

In addition to the scholarships, the program includes various innovation workshops and a dynamic, interactive speaker series for interested members of the academic community at participating universities. Through these initiatives, the Foundation is dedicated to inspiring the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship among university students, importing more international best practices in innovation and, ultimately, contributing to the country’s success.

The five years spent supporting engineering innovation exemplify Avery Dennison’s persistence in pursuing technology and business advancement, which has been the company’s driving force since its foundation in 1935. ADF will continue to invest in the sustainability of the communities it serves by promoting industrial innovation and entrepreneurship.
