In honor of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day, it is important to recognize the countless contributions women make to our business and our industry, and reinforce our company’s commitment to advancing professional women throughout our organization.

International Women's Day 2017
Across Avery Dennison we take gender diversity seriously. Women comprise nearly half of the general workforce, but in manufacturing that number women represent 27 percent.* It’s for this reason we developed our Women. Empowered. initiative, offering female managers and directors–around the world–insightful courses and valuable tools that expand their skills, and initiating meaningful dialogue to inspire them to network fearlessly and lead with authenticity.

Here’s what a few of the recent participants Women. Empowered. have to say about their experiences:

Heidi Choy

“I have been impressed with the courses and even more so with the participants! Everyone opened up during discussions and was willing to share personal experiences. My “a-ha” moment dawned at the Influence and Persuasion session, when I wrote in big block letters: ‘Be True to Who I Am!’–no matter what I do, no matter what situation I have to handle.”

Mindful Interactions in the Workplace

By design, the growth participants experience through this program has an enormous impact on their jobs and work life, and has resulted in greater self-awareness, clarity, and unity among co-workers.

Jackie Blaise

“One of my takeaways from this program– specifically in the sessions about conflict handling and influencing others–was opening my mind to consider others in any interaction, including how they may react. Empowerment is in our hands now!”

Jackie Blaise, Senior Manager, Global Mobility, Corporate EU and US

“This program gave me a platform to grow with a group of excellent female leaders. I was inspired to bring my unique perspective, passions, and points of view to work every day.”

Overcoming Networking Angst

Not everyone is born with the ability to openly and easily connect with others in networking environments, and yet it is critical to advancing our careers, particularly for women. For those who panic at the idea of walking into a room full of strangers or colleagues and singing their own praise, Women. Empowered. focuses developing vital networking skills so that women can connect with confidence.

Lisa Boettger

“’What do you think of when you hear the word networking?’ That is the first sentence I read before the Networking module and I thought, FEAR! I am scared to death of networking, but
in this module I discovered I am not alone in that fear. It helped me see there isn't much to it.  Networking is not as scary as I made it out to be.”

Lisa Boettger, Operations and Material Manager, LGM

“Learning that other women were going through similar challenges and that I'm not alone in this journey was big for me. My new perspective is that I relate to others more than I might be aware and it has helped me gain more self-confidence.”

Leading with Authenticity

Why is leading with authenticity so important? Being your true self and expressing your honest values at work helps build trust, while furthering our own ambition and that of others. At Avery Dennison, we expect our leaders to drive towards our mission, instill our core values, inspire others, and get the best out of their teams.

Karen Bender

“As I reflect back on my Women. Empowered. learning journey, I feel the biggest impact on me was the Lead with Authenticity sessions. Having learned more about my strengths, and now knowing myself better, I am inspired to be the most genuine leader I can be.”

Karen Bender, Senior HR Manager, Corporate

“The content was thought-provoking and it really inspired me to think more deeply about how my personal values and strengths can impact leadership. By practicing a growth mindset and being more mindful and self-aware, I can be more genuine and confident in my decisions.”

Women face unique challenges in the workplace. The goal of the Women. Empowered. program is to help them strengthen their professional skills, boost their confidence, and increase their leadership potential to overcome those challenges.
